Non tournament Karate was the standard until 1955 when the Korean form of Karate, Tae Kwon Do was formed and changed the self defense aspects of Karate into a watered down version that we see today in tournaments.

Self defense Karate utilized the original hard hitting moves to disable an attacker in the most brutal ways. These ways were outlawed in sport Karate that is used in tournaments
